Pen Making on the Wood Lathe

  • Blue Heron Woodworking (map)

Making ink pens on the wood lathe is a fun hobby, and they make great gifts! The student will learn how to make the basic 7mm pen, from start to finish. This includes cutting the blanks, gluing the brass tubes inside, turning the barrels, sanding and applying a finish, and assembling the pen. The class will introduce the student to basic wood turning tools and spindle turning techniques, to include roughing out the blank, shaping the barrels, adding designs, and sanding. Best of all, the student gets to take the assembled pen home to show off to the family!

Students should bring work clothing with NO long sleeves or dangling drawstrings.  Long hair MUST be tied back or held in a cap.  No loose jewelry.

Eye protection and dust mask are required . We have PPE on hand but it is best to have your own PPE if possible.
